Blackburn and Epel struggled initially to publish their boundary-crossing paper. Researchers have since linked perceived stress to shorter telomeres in healthy women as well as in Alzheimers caregivers, victims of domestic abuse and early life trauma, and people with major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Ten years on, theres no question in my mind that the environment has some consequence on telomere length, says Mary Armanios, a clinician and geneticist at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who studies telomere disorders.There is also progredienz towards a mechanism. Lab studies show that the stress hormone cortisol reduces the activity of telomerase, while oxidative stress and inflammation the physiological fallout of psychological stress appear to erode telomeres directly.This seems to have devastating consequences for our health. Age-related conditions from osteoarthritis, diabetes and obesity to heart disease, Alzheimers and stroke have all been linked to short telomeres.The big question for researchers now is whether telomeres are simply a harmless marker of age-related damage (like grey hair, say) or themselves play a role in causing the health problems that plague us as we age. People with genetic mutations affecting the enzyme telomerase, who have much shorter telomeres than normal, suffer from accelerated-ageing syndromes and their organs progressively fail. But Armanios questions whether the smaller reductions in telomer e length caused by stress are relevant for health, especially as telomere lengths are so variable in the first place.Blackburn, however, says she is increasingly convinced that the effects of stress do matter. Although the genetic mutations affecting the maintenance of telomeres have a smaller effect than the extreme syndromes Armanios studies, Blackburn points out that they do increase the risk of chronic disease later in life. And several studies have shown that our telomeres predict future health. One showed that elderly men whose telomeres shortened over two-and-a-half years were three times as likely to die from cardiovascular disease in the subsequent nine years as those whose telomeres stayed the same length or got longer. In another study, looking at over 2,000 healthy Native Americans, those with the shortest telomeres were more than twice as likely to develop diabetes over the next five-and-a-half years, even taking into account conventional risk factors such as body mass index and fasting glucose.Blackburn is now moving into even bigger studies, including a collaboration with healthcare giant Kaiser Permanente of Northern California that has involved measuring the telomeres of 100,000 people. The hope is that combining telomere length with data from the volunteers genomes and electronic medical records will reveal plus-rechnenal links between telomere length and disease, as well as more genetic mutations that affect telomere length. The results arent published yet, but Blackburn is excited about what the data already shows about longevity. She traces the curve with her finger as the population ages, average telomere length goes down. This much we know telomeres tend to shorten over time. But at age 7580, the curve swings back up as people with shorter telomeres die off proof that those with longer telomeres really do live longer. Its lovely, she says. No one has ever seen that.In the decade since Blackburn and Epels original study, the idea that st ress ages us by eroding our telomeres has also permeated popular culture. In addition to Blackburns many scientific accolades, she was named one of Time magazines 100 most influential people in the world in 2007, and received a Good Housekeeping achievement award in 2011. A workaholic character played by Cameron Diaz even described the concept in the 2006 Hollywood film The Holiday. It resonates, says Blackburn.But as evidence of the damage caused by dwindling telomeres piles up, she is embarking on a new question how to protect them.At first, the beach seems busy. Waves splash and splash and splash. Sanderlings wheel along the shoreline. Joggers and dog walkers amble across, while groups of pelicans hang out on the water before taking wing or floating out of sight. For Buddhists this is a spiritual quest by letting trivial thoughts and external influences fall away, they hope to get closer to the true nature of reality.Blackburn too is interested in the nature of reality, but after a career spent focusing on the measurable and quantifiable, such navel-gazing initially held little personal appeal and certainly no professional interest. Ten years ago, if youd told me that I would be seriously thinking about meditation, I would have said one of us is loco, she told the New York Times in 200 7. Yet that is where her work on telomeres has brought her. Since her initial study with Epel, the pair have become involved in collaborations with teams around the world as many as 50 or 60, Blackburn estimates, spinning in wonderful directions. Many of these focus on ways to protect telomeres from the effects of stress trials suggest that exercise, eating healthily and social support all help. But one of the most effective interventions, apparently capable of slowing the erosion of telomeres and perhaps even lengthening them again is meditation.So far the studies are small, but they all tentatively point in the same direction. In one ambitious project, Blackburn and her colleagues sent participants to meditate at the Shambhala mountain retreat in northern Colorado. Those who completed a three-month course had 30% higher levels of telomerase than a similar group on a waiting list. A pilot study of dementia caregivers, carried out with UCLAs Irwin and published in 2013, found tha t volunteers who did an ancient chanting meditation called Kirtan Kriya, 12 minutes a day for eight weeks, had significantly higher telomerase activity than a control group who listened to relaxing music. And a collaboration with UCSF physician and self-help guru Dean Ornish, also published in 2013, found that men with low-risk prostate cancer who undertook comprehensive lifestyle changes, including meditation, kept their telomerase activity higher than similar men in a control group and had slightly longer telomeres after five years.In their latest study, Epel and Blackburn are following 180 mothers, half of whom have a child with autism. The trial involves measuring the womens stress levels and telomere length over two years, then testing the effects of a short course of mindfulness training, delivered with the help of a mobile app.Theories differ as to how meditation might boost telomeres and telomerase, but most likely it reduces stress. The practice involves slow, regular breat hing, which may relax us physically by calming the fight-or-flight response. It probably has a psychological stress-busting effect too. Being able to step back from negative or stressful thoughts may allow us to realize that these are not necessarily accurate reflections of reality but passing, ephemeral events. It also helps us to appreciate the present instead of continually worrying about the past or planning for the future.Being present in your activities and in your interactions is precious, and its rare these days with all of the multitasking we do, says Epel. I do think that in general weve got a society with scattered attention, particularly when people are highly stressed and dont have the resources to just be present wherever they are.Inevitably, when a Nobel Prize-winner starts talking about meditation, it ruffles a few feathers. In general, Blackburns methodical approach to the topic has earned a grudging admiration, even among those who have expressed concern about the health claims made for alternative medicine. She goes about her business in a cautious and systematic fashion, says Edzard Ernst of the University of Exeter, UK, who specializes in testing complementary therapies in rigorous controlled trials. Oncologist James Coyne of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, who is skeptical of this field in general and describes some of the research on positive psychology and health as morally offensive and tooth fairy science, concedes that some of Blackburns data is promising.Others arent so impressed. Surgeon-oncologist David Gorski is a well-known critic of alternative medicine and pseudoscience who blogs under the name of Orac hes previously described Dean Ornish as one of the four horsemen of the Woo-pocalypse. Gorski stops short of pronouncing meditation as off-limits for scientific inquiry, but expresses concern that the preliminary results of these studies are being oversold. How can the researchers be sure theyre investigating it r igorously? Its really hard to do with these things, he says. It is easy to be led astray. Nobel Prize-winners are not infallible. Blackburns own biochemistry community also seems ambivalent about her interest in meditation. Three senior telomere researchers I contacted declined to discuss this aspect of her work, with one explaining that he didnt want to comment on such a controversial issue.People are very uncomfortable with the concept of meditation, notes Blackburn. She attributes this to its unfamiliarity and its association with spiritual and religious practices. Were always trying to say it as carefully as we can always saying look, its preliminary, its a pilot. But people wont even read those words. Theyll see the newspaper headings and panic.Any connotation of religious or paranormal beliefs makes many scientists uneasy, says Chris French, a psychologist at Goldsmiths, University of London, who studies anomalous experiences including altered states of consciousness. There ar e a lot of raised eyebrows, even though Ive got the word skeptic virtually tattooed across my forehead, he says. It smacks of new-age woolly ideas for some people. Theres a kneejerk dismissive response of we all know its nonsense, why are you wasting your time? When meditation first came to the West in the 1960s it was tied to the drug culture, the hippie culture, adds Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Harvard who studies how meditation changes the structure of the brain. People think its just a bunch of crystals or something, they roll their eyes. She describes her own decision to study meditation, made 15 years ago, as brave or crazy, and says that she only plucked up the courage because at around the same time, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) created the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. That gave me the confidence that I could do this and I would get funding.The gezeit is now turning. Helped in part by that NIH money, researchers have developed secularised or non-religious practices such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and reported a range of health effects from lowering blood pressure and boosting immune responses to warding off depression. And the past few years have seen a spurt of neuroscience studies, like Lazars, showing that even short courses of meditation can forge structural changes in the brain.Now that the brain data and all this clinical data are coming out, that is starting to change. People are a lot more accepting of meditation, says Lazar. But there are still some people who will never believe that it has any benefit whatsoever.Blackburns view is that meditation is a fair topic to study, as long as robust methods are used. So when her research first pointed in this direction, she was undaunted by concerns about what such studies might do to her reputation. Instead, she tried it out for herself, on an intensive six-day retreat in Santa Barbara. I loved it, s he says. She still uses short bursts of meditation, which she says sharpen her mind and help her to avoid a busy, distracted mode. In a low, melodious voice that I strain to hear through the background clatter, the 65-year-old tells me of her first major brush with Buddhist thinking.In September 2006, she attended a conference held at the Menla Mountain Buddhist center, a remote retreat in New Yorks Catskill mountains, at which Western scientists met with Tibetan-trained scholars including the Dalai Lama to discuss longevity, regeneration and health. For these holistic scholars, even the smallest events were infused with meaning. I suddenly thought, whoa, this is a very different world from the one Im on.But instead of dismissing her Eastern counterparts, she was impressed, finding the Dalai Lama to have a very good brain, for example. Theyre scholarly in a very different way, but it is still good-quality thinking, she explains. It wasnt God told me this, it was more lets see what actually happens in the brain. So there are certain elements of the approach that I am quite comfortable with as a scientist.Blackburn isnt tempted to embrace the spiritual approach herself. Im rooted in the physical world, she says. But she combines that grounding with an open mind towards new ideas and connections, and she seems to love breaking out of established para digms. For example, she and Epel have shown that the effects of stress on telomeres can be passed on to the next generation. If women experience stress while pregnant, their children have shorter telomeres, as newborns and as adults in direct contradiction of the standard view that traits can only be passed on via our genes.In the future, information from telomeres may help doctors decide when to prescribe particular drugs. For example, telomerase activity predicts who will respond to treatment for major depression, while telomere length influences the effects of statins. In general, however, Blackburn is more interested in how telomeres might help people directly, by encouraging them to live in a way that reduces their disease risk. This is not a familiar model for the medical world, she says.Conventional medical tests give us our risk of particular conditions high cholesterin warns of impending heart disease, for example, while high blood sugar predicts diabetes. Telomere length , by contrast, gives an overall reading of how healthy we are our biological age. And although we already know that we should exercise, eat well and reduce stress, many of us fall short of these goals. Blackburn believes that putting a concrete number on how we are doing could provide a powerful incentive to change our behavior. In fact, she and Epel have just completed a study (as yet unpublished) showing that simply being told their telomere length caused volunteers to live more healthily over the next year than a similar group who werent told.Ultimately, however, the pair want entire countries and governments to start paying attention to telomeres. A growing body of work now shows that the stress from social adversity and inequality is a major force eroding these protective caps. People who didnt finish high school or are in an abusive relationship have shorter telomeres, for example, while studies have also shown links with low socioeconomic status, shift work, lousy neighborhoo ds and environmental pollution. Children are particularly at risk being abused or experiencing adversity early in life leaves people with shorter telomeres for the rest of their lives. And through telomeres, the stress that women experience during pregnancy affects the health of the next generation too, causing hardship and economic costs for decades to come.In 2012, Blackburn and Epel wrote a commentary in the journal Nature, listing some of these results and calling on politicians to prioritize societal stress reduction. In particular, they argued, improving the education and health of women of child-bearing age could be a highly effective way to prevent poor health filtering down through generations. Meditation retreats or yoga classes might help those who can afford the time and expense, they pointed out. But we are talking about broad socioeconomic policies to buffer the chronic stressors faced by so many. Where many scientists refrain from discussing the political implications of their work, Blackburn says she wanted to speak out on behalf of women who lack support, and say Youd better take their situations seriously.While arguments for tackling social inequality are hardly new, Blackburn says that telomeres allow us to quantify for the first time the health impact of stress and inequality and therefore the resulting economic costs. We can also now pinpoint pregnancy and early childhood as imprinting periods when telomere length is particularly susceptible to stress. Together, she says, this evidence makes a stronger case than ever before for governments to act.But it seems that most scientists and politicians still arent ready to leap across the interdisciplinary canyon that Blackburn and Epel bridged a decade ago. The Nature article has engendered little response, according to a frustrated Epel. Its a strong statement so I would have thought that people would have criticised it or supported it, she says. I am still learning 11 years later, and I continue to get advice from other entrepreneurs- not just from those much further along than I, but also from entrepreneurs just embarking on their small geschftlicher umgang journey. Im thankful for the mentors at my first startup who gave me some tough feedback chill out. It wasnt easy to hear that at the time, but it helped me appreciate that people work and problem-solve differently. Through the years, I have learned to hold my team accountable on outcomes without micromanaging how they got to the result. This has enabled me to be more human as a manager and leader, because demonstrating this trust in my team is essential for building their trust in me. For me, that meant writing a 75-page business plan before I even started LearnVest. Few people actually read it, but it wound up being an invaluable exercise for me. Having to articulate my strategy to other people whose opinions I respected forced me to be exhaustive in my research and helped prepare me for leaping into a position of leadership, where I had to be the one calling the shots and answering the questions by the minute. When it comes down to it, a good business plan is like any other effective plan you need to create concrete goals for yourself so you can track your progress and re-evaluate along the way. Once you get your business up and running, you feel like your hair is on fire Youre putting out fires left and right and you no longer h ave the luxury of being able to stop and say, Whats my strategy? At this point, you simply dont have time. So its really important to have a crystal clear strategy before you take the leap. That way, once youre in the business, youre well equipped for anything and everything that comes your way. Alexa von Tobel launched LearnVest in 2009. When I was establishing my organization a decade ago, I spent some time trying to assemble a strong global advisory board. Six months into Endeavor, I learned that Peter Brooke, the legendary VC and private equity pioneer, was speaking at Harvard Business School, so I followed him- all the way to Cambridge, then the Aldrich Lecture Hall, then to the mens bathroom- where I successfully cornered him into becoming a chairman. Courtney Nichols, Co-founder andCo-CEO ofSmarty Pants Know yourself, and know that whatever you dont know about yourself, you are going to learn the hard way. Startups, like children, are mirror s for all your flaws. They will be exposed, so you need to have a flexible perspective. You have to be accountable for your failings and relentless in learning how to address them so that they dont get in the way of your success. You are your company. If you lie to yourself about your weaknesses, you will kill your business in the process. Courtney Nichols founded SmartyPants, a health wellness company that produces gummy vitamins, in 2009. Nicole Centeno, Founder and CEO of Splendid Spoon View failure as a gift. When the business is in pain, it will force you into submission, and if you listen, it will give back to you. For the first two years I was a solo founder, and the business completely broke me. I had two babies under the age of two, a strained marriage, and I was trying to do it all. The business had taken off, but then it stopped. I put one foot in front of the other and opened myself up to the idea of inviting another leader into my realm. Sathish Naadimuthu, who is n ow our CMO, joined in July 2015, and we worked hard to make a significant pivot- moving the business from a primarily wholesale model to direct to consumer. Within a month of re-launching the site, our business had quadrupled. Nicole Centeno founded Splendid Spoon in 2013.

Habits This is why creating habits is so difficult Habits This is why creating habits is so difficult It’s a wonderful idea to try to find a set of systems and principles that “work better” for big swaths of your life. These include  better habits, better mental tendencies, better methods of inquiry, and so on. We’re strong advocates of this approach.  We believe that good thinking and good decision making can be learned the same as a good golf swing can: through practice and instruction. The problem with the search for self-improvement methods, including the kind of multidisciplinary thinking we espouse, is that many, perhaps most of them, are a snare and a delusion for most people. And there’s a simple reason why. They won’t actually do it Think about it. Isn’t that the most common result? That you don’t do it? For example, we heard from many people after we wrote a piece late last year on Reading 25 Pages a Day, a little practice that we think would benefit almost anyone in creating a very desirable reading habit. What we suspect, though, is that even of the subset of people who felt so strongly about the idea that they contacted us, only a minority of them followed through and maintained to the habit to this day, ten months later. Why is that? A huge part of it is homeostasis: the basic self-regulating feedback loops that keep us repeating the same habits over and over. These are the predictable forces that keep us from changing ourselves, just as they keep us from changing organizations  (or changing any self-regulating system). Most newly proposed systems or habits (mental or physical) follow a basic formula whereby a solution is proposed with no broccoli needing to be eaten. Lose weight, no problem! Get rich, no problem! Train your brain in 30 days, no problem! After giving such a tempting system a shot, most people realize that either the proposed solution contains much broccoli indeed, or that it doesn’t work at all. With regards to the 25-pages a day reading “system” we outlined, we were careful not to make a “no broccoli” promise. All we said was that reading 25 pages per day was a habit that almost anyone could form, and that it would lead them far. But you still have to do all the reading. You have to do the thing That’s the part where everyone falls away. In other words,  the “failure point” with any new system, any method of improvement, any proposed solution to a life problem or an organization problem is when the homeostatic regulation kicks in, when we realize some part of it will be hard, new, or unnatural. Even a really well-designed system, of which there are many, can only chop the broccoli into little pieces and sneak it into your mac-and-cheese. For example, let’s say you proposed to take our advice but started with 10 pages a day. Then 20 pages every day. Then 25 pages every other day. And then, finally, the full 25 page a day habit. Great! You’ve eased yourself in. But will you keep the habit when it’s inconvenient to do so? Congratulations, you’ve reached the broccoli point.  This is the part where most people tuck and roll.  When faced with a plate of broccoli day after day, they go back to eating junk. This happens when the habit isn’t truly formed yet. We think we’re there, but we’re really not? - ?we’ve just been fooled by our sensory apparatus. So here’s a test to see if the habit is real or imagined. When you’re really “there,” going back feels uncomfortable, it feels like cutting off your hands. In other words, you should be preferring the broccoli. One final point: when you’re evaluating a proposed improvement to your life or to your organization, you must figure out when and where the broccoli will get eaten, and understand that you will have to sacrifice something (even if it’s just comfort) to get what you want. And if anyone ever promises you “no broccoli,” it’s probably a sham. There really is no free lunch Anything really worth doing is probably hard work, and will absolutely require you to do things you don’t currently do, which will feel uncomfortable for a while. Nearly $250,000 is available exclusively to ASME members through the program, which is introducing two new joint ASME/Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) awards this year. The ASME Scholarship Program seeks to promote the art and science of mechanical engineering by encouraging outstanding students particularly those involved in volunteer activities that benefit others by relieving some of the financial burden of pursuing an education. ASME scholarships are made possible by the generous contributions of donors through the ASME Foundation and ASME Auxiliary. Students need only to complete a single electronic application to apply for nearly all of the scholarships available through the program. Scholarships for graduate school study include the $4,500 Willis F. Thompson Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to as many as three students; the $4,000 ASME/Virginia Tech Memorial Scholarship; and the $3,000 Kate Gleason Scholarship. Two new joint ASME/SHPE Scholarships will be offered this year for the first time. The $5,000 scholarships, which will be awarded to an undergraduate student and a grad student, are open to students who are joint members of ASME and SHPE. My style is my style â€" office culture be damned. Being younger gives me a bit of wiggle room for fashion faux pas at work. Yep, I’m still stuck on talking about how to dress for success. Why? Because I’ve seen so many people get this OH SO WRONG! And if you answered TRUE to the quiz questions above … Houston, we have a problem. I want to make sure I hit the topic from all angles because I really believe through dressing, you  can  brand yourself as a successful professional. And that’s exactly what others will come to expect from you.I keep telling y’all I’m old school. I believe you should always dress for the career you  want, not the job you have. There was a young woman in one of the offices in which I worked who regularly wore sweatpants to work. I’m not even talking about the cute, Juicy Couture velour two-set look. No, she wore much-too-large, gray shapeless sweatpants and sweatshirt- the kind I wouldn’t even wear to the grocery store.  You know how drivers can cause a gaper’s delay slowing down to see an accident on the highway because they can’t tear their eyes away? Every t ime I saw this woman, I literally stopped in my tracks. Now, apparently her boss never said a word to her about it (or she just didn’t listen). She must’ve been great at her job because she was there before and after I left the company. But she was in the  exact  same role when I left. So if that’s where she aspired to be, then I guess it’s okay. But really,  sweatpants? That’s taking casual day too far.If you’re just starting out or are in a new role, you may be able to “fake it while you make it” as you develop your skill set- and the basic guidelines found on this website can help you with that. But there’s no faking a crisp, professional style. In fact, your look may buy you a little more time on the job’s learning curve. It can have just that much of an impact. Accentuating tastefully is a helpful technique to learn.The best piece of advice I can give you is to align your style with your corporate culture. At 5 feet, 9 ½ inches tall, with curves that Lionel Richie and the Commodores sang about (Awww, she’s a brick … H-O-U-S-E!), a straight-leg, gray pinstripe pantsuit is not for me. But a gray pinstripe dress that drapes and cinches at my waist, paired with open-toe cranberry-colored stilettos, is. I’ve embraced what God gave me by tastefully accentuating my curves while still commanding respect. Choose clothes that fit your body well, and hairstyles that flatter your face. Walk into your office wearing a blouse that is too tight, in heels that make you wobble, and you’re losing points before you even open your mouth. Your clothes and hairstyles should make you say “Wow” (in a good way) when you’re looking in the mirror.Here’s a litmus test you should take each morning before you walk out your door. If you're a new stay-at-home parent, here are a few tips to get the work done without going crazy. Be Realistic! Lets face it: caring for kids is a full-time job, especially when they are younger than school-aged. Your typical day already consists of diaper duty, snack and meal times, play activities, and (hopefully) educational instruction of some sort. Being realistic means that you cannot expect to schedule a full 8 hours of uninterrupted work time during the dayits just not going to happen. You also cant force yourself to stay up all night thinking that you can power through on coffee and Red Bull while everyone is asleep. It is critical that you build your work schedule around the needs of your children and yourself. Youll run out of gas in a hurry if you dont make time to rest and recharge. So, strive for a balanced approach. Work Smart, Get Help In many cases, it can be helpful to enlist support from a trustworthy friend or relative who can watch the kids for a few hours a week while you work. If no one is available, check your local community resources, like the YMCA, for a parents day out program that will allow you a few hours of quiet time in exchange for a small fee. The resultant productivity boost could be well worth the cost. If your work-at-home job or business contributes the lions share of your household income, it could be more cost-effective for the other parent to stay home as well, rather than pay daycare costs for multiple children. Talk it over and see if that could be an option for you. Keep Kids Occupied (and Supervised)! If you have no choice but to keep your little ones at home while you work, find activities to keep their minds busy, such as educational games, puzzles, coloring books, or other brain-building activities to keep them quiet and entertained. It goes without saying that leaving your tot alone for hours in front of the TV while you try to work is negligent and generally a bad idea. Give your little one constructive activities and keep them clearly within your sight at all times, taking occasional breaks from your work to ensure their needs are met. Create a Schedule The shortest route to insanity is to avoid making a schedule. Without a schedule in place, you wont be able to control your time and things can get out of hand quickly, leaving you (and your kids) feeling flustered. Most work-at-home parents try to work early in the morning, late at night, or during nap times to ensure they are available during the day to care for their kids. Whatever your preference, try to follow a predictable routine, if possible, so everyone knows what to expect. Maintain Focus Have you ever worked on a tough assignment, buckled down, found your groove, and started smoothly churning out the work? What happens next? If youre like me, that sounds like the perfect time for your 3-year-old to burst into the room and ask repeatedly for a sandwich, or your mom calls to talk about last nights episode of Dancing with the Stars. Thought process terminated. Game over. How do you avoid distractions and stay on track? Tell your friends and family when you are scheduled to work and fiercely protect those scheduled times. Thats right: turn the ringer off, disable your Twitter and Facebook notifications, and ignore your non-work-related emails. Dont worry; theyll wait patiently until youre done working. You must optimize your time and be disciplined if you want to get anything done. Get Real! Above all, be flexible! Things have a way of not going according to plan, so be ready to reexamine and adjust as necessary. By being realistic, working smart, keeping kids occupied and on a schedule, and maintaining focus on your priorities, you can be successful as a work-at-home parent with small kidswithout losing your mind.

Engineers Must Embrace Aspirational Ethics Engineers Must Embrace Aspirational Ethics Engineers Must Embrace Aspirational Ethics As an academic field, engineering ethics is shifting away from focusing on ethical problems from the perspective of individual engineers to more expansive concerns, such as codes of ethics concerning human development and human rights, often led by professional societies and national and international bodies. More recent research involves historians and social and behavioral scientists, as well as science and technology scholars, who examine issues of complex systems and collective as well as individual responsibility, says Rachelle Hollander, center director at the National Academy of Engineering. This involves issues of design and implementation and whether traditional theories and approaches in ethics must be revised, augmented, or cast aside in light of the difficulties that complexity creates for development and management. Modern problems in engineering ethics that Hollander mentions include: Do ethical commonalities cover all engineering fields, or is different guidance needed? To what assistance in fulfilling their ethical responsibilities are engineers entitled? How can engineered systems identify and address issues of social inequity? How should engineers participate in societal determinations about promoting innovation? Are there engineered systems that are too complex or dangerous to introduce in society? How should engineers and the engineering profession contribute to a future that is economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable? What is the proper role for engineering ethics across political, geographical, and generational boundaries? Need to Re-Focus Ed Harris, professor of the history and ethics of professional engineering at Texas AM University, believes one of the most important ethical issues engineers face is the need to re-focus from preventive to aspirational ethics. Photo source: ASCEHouston.org This would be a shift away from preventive ethics, which concerns itself with the prevention of professional misconduct and harm to the public from technology, to what I call aspirational ethics, which has to do with using technology to promote human well-being, says Harris. Some scholars use the term peace engineering or humanitarian engineeringa good example would be Bernard Amadei, founder of Engineers without Borders. Macro and Micro Challenges A related term for aspirational ethics is macroethicsthe effort to collectively make the best possible engineering decisions on critical issues that have global impact, such as human cloning, sustainable development, stem cell research, and climate change. Research and teaching related to engineering ethics have for the most part focused on microanalysis of individual ethical dilemmas in areas like health and safety issues in engineering design, conflict of interest, representation of test data, whistle blowing, quality control, trade secrets, and gift-giving, with little attention being paid to macroethics in engineering, and still fewer attempts to integrate both microethical and macroethical approaches to engineering ethics, says Joseph R. Civil Engineer Civil engineers are hired primarily by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and infrastructures for both civil works and military installations.
