4 ways technology redefines work-life boundaries
4 ways technology redefines work-life boundaries The days of being anchored to a cubicle for a standard eight-hour workday are becoming a thing of the past, as remote work begins to overshadow traditional workplace practices. To many people, this means more time with family, flexible hours, and being able to work from the comfort of your couch â" but it can also mean the introduction of workplace technology that creeps into your personal life when youâre off the clock. Many companies are now ditching traditional email and opting for project management platforms such as Taskworld, which allows you to access your work, chat with your team, and safely share files from all your devices. The goal of these platforms is to streamline project management and team communication, but it also raises the question of whether it makes employees feel obligated to stay connected 24/7. A recent study by Workplace Trends and CareerArc found 64 percent of employers reported they expect staff to be reachable outside of the office, even on personal time. This might have to do with the majority of workers who now find it second nature to scroll through Instagram, Facebook, and their work email as theyâre winding down after work. Taskworld chief executive officer and serial entrepreneur Fred Mouawad has kept a close eye on recent workplace trends and has revamped his platform to help improve work-life balance, while still catering to the ever-changing workplace. Below are his tips to achieve work-life balance â" especially for employees who feel like having their work at their fingertips equates to being plugged in at all hours. 1. Being connected 24/7 doesnât mean youâre being productive Being connected 24/7 means youâre constantly reacting . People who are constantly replying to emails and touching their smart phones have the elusive sense they are being productive when they are not. Productivity means youâre in control of your time, and you decide how to spend your hours based on your objectives. You canât stay connected all the time and be present in a two-hour business meeting or at a family dinner. Itâs very important to disconnect and focus on the objective at hand. 2. Find your own work-life balance Work and life should be integrated in how you plan your waking hours. Time is finite, so you have to find the balance in your planning. With more flex time and working remotely, people will have more flexibility to attend to personal and family matters, which is a major benefit. It will, however, require more upfront planning and the discipline to execute your plan. Unless you can manage that flexibility, you may lose yourself by under- or overworking 3. If you opt to work remotely, you can only succeed with a high degree of self discipline Some remote workers might be unproductive when they respond to a desire to frequently engage in household chores. On the other hand, others might get burned out because they donât know when to start or stop working. Working effectively at home requires that you set clear goals, plan ahead, track your time, and make sure youâre working to your fullest within your dedicated work hours. Because you have more flexibility compared to regular corporate hours, it requires much more planning and control over your schedule. When working remotely, be sure to take advantage of productivity platforms to assist with juggling your work and personal life. For example, Taskworld offers âSmart Notifications,â a setting that will only send you notifications about tasks you want to hear about so that your inbox doesnât get flooded with unnecessary updates. 4. Work-life balance vs. flexible work schedule â" you CAN have both When it comes to work-life balance, flexibility is key. The problem is the lack of control that stems from not knowing how to plan and not having the discipline to follow through. Set realistic daily goals and have a high degree of self-discipline to achieve them. If you take undue advantage of flexible work schedules, procrastinate, and then complain about lack of work-life balance, then youâve only got yourself to blame. Whether you have chosen to work remotely or not, workplace technology will ultimately become a key component in of most of our professional lives. However, itâs important to make sure that it doesnât begin to own our lives. Advancements in technology will continue to allow work to be done from any location, but it is now up to you to determine what boundaries you want to put in place to prevent burnout.

Job search inspiration from New York City -
Job search inspiration from New York City - When I travel, I try not to worry about how often I blog. For me, Ive found its better to try to have some new experiences to inspire my posts. I recently returned from New York City, where I visit every year to meet colleagues and to see family and friends. I have a list of job search related ideas to consider adding to my blog. I already wrote about how the horse-and-buggy driver provided a great lesson about defining your unique value proposition. Its been a hectic week returning from being away, so I thought Id re-share a post I wrote several years ago after visiting NYC. I think its still relevant. Stay tuned for a few more career lessons inspired by my trip to the Big Apple! Recently, I had an opportunity to ride the New York City subway. I say opportunity, because watching other passengers and what goes on in and around the subway offers an array of ideas for my blog. One passenger stands out in my mind. Anyone whos ridden the subway knows that you rarely get from point A to point B without encountering someone asking for money. Sometimes, its in exchange for some type of entertainment, other times simply because the person is hungry. While sitting and minding my own business, I noticed a man in a wheelchair making his way through the train asking for change. At the other side of the train, another panhandler burst into the car with a loud and boisterous call for assistance. Uh oh, I thought, Dueling panhandlers. What now? The loud newcomer immediately noticed the man in the wheelchair. He stopped calling for a handout and came to sit down next to me. I watched him go through his pockets and pull out all of his change. He counted it. It wasnt much maybe several dollars worth of coins. He sorted and fingered through it as I watched on the sly. He stood up and approached the man in the wheelchair. What now? I thought. I lived in NYC and rode the trains daily for years, but I dont remember ever seeing two people in the same train car asking for money. (Maybe this is a sign of the times and is now commonplace.) I admit that I was pretty surprised to see the man who had carefully counted his change offer a portion to the panhandler in the wheelchair. Here was someone who clearly didnt have much offering part of his take to someone else who may have an even more difficult life. I thought this made an inspiring story. Looking for a job is tough and trying work for even the most intrepid job seeker. Stop and take stock: how can you assist someone who needs help even more than you? Ive suggested volunteering as a great activity for a job seeker, as it offers networking opportunities as well as a chance to really give back to your community. But the panhandler offering some of his loot to another really put a spotlight on the issue of helping your neighbor. photo by Shuggy

Careers How to Tell Your Boss You Want to Work From Home
Careers How to Tell Your Boss You Want to Work From Home These days, more and more employees are working from home on a regular basis. In fact, Global Workplace Analytics says that about 2.8% of the total workforce work from home at least half time. Nearly all U.S. workers say theyâd like to work from home at least part-time, and about half the workforce say they could work remotely at least some of the time. But what if youâre not one the lucky ones who stumbles into a job that already allows working from home, whether sometimes or on a regular basis? In this case, you might need to convince your boss that working from home is a good idea. And, in fact, working from home is a good idea, much of the time. It can actually save you money, and it can reduce your overall stress level. And if youâre like many people, you might actually get more done in less time when youâre working from home. But those arguments, especially the ones that are mostly beneficial to your personal life, may not be enough to convince your boss to let you work from home. Here are four more convincing arguments to try: 1. Better Productivity Working from home isnât a good fit for all jobs, but for some types, studies show that working from home actually increases productivity. 2. Reduced Overhead Costs Outfitting an employee with an office or even cubicle comes with overhead costs. Not to mention all that water you flush down the toilet on bathroom breaks! In fact, many large employers started moving employees to work from home positions specifically to reduce overhead costs. (Of course, youâll be taking on some of those costs by working from home â" increased electricity and water usage can eat into your savings on commuting. You can try some of these easy penny pinching tips to help offset those costs. 3. Fewer Sick Days Having the ability to work from home often curbs the number of sick days you take. You might not drag yourself into the office when youâre feeling under the weather, but you may opt to work as normal from your comfortable couch. Your fellow employees will appreciate fewer germs, anyway. 4. At-Home Workers Are Happier (and Stay Longer) If working from home is really important to you, and if youâre in a field where itâs common, you may be more likely to stay in your job for the long term if you are allowed some flexibility to work from home. You donât necessarily need to tell your boss this, but you can show that employees who work from home are happier in their jobs. Making Your Proposal Pulling It Off Now that youâve got some arguments in your back pocket, how do you go about actually asking your boss to let you work from home? Here are a few steps to take: 1. Create a Formal Proposal Donât just approach working from home by the seat of your pants, especially if itâs not already a common practice in your workplace. Instead, create a formal proposal for what working from home would look like for you. What tasks would you accomplish at home? How would you handle meetings and phone calls? Would you be available during certain hours online? How would you keep track of the tasks that youâre working on at home? What sort of accountability system could you build in? Put all this into writing. When in doubt, talk to someone else with a job similar to yours who works from home. See what kind of arrangements they have with their employers, and go from there. If others in your organization work from home, talk to them about their written work plans, too. Read: Millennials: Will Work for Travel 2. Pre-empt Your Bossâs Concerns When youâre creating your proposal, try to think about it from your bossâs perspective. What concerns will he or she likely have? You know this person best as a supervisor, so you can likely anticipate how the conversation will go. Again, talk to others in your organization who work from home sometimes or regularly, and use that as a jumping off point. Youâll want to work those points into your written proposal, preferably, or at least address them in your conversation with your boss. 3. Propose a Trial Run Donât just jump in and ask to switch your in-office job to a full-time, work-from-home position. Instead, propose a trial. You may want to propose a part-time work from home schedule of one to three days per week at first. And you should also suggest trying to work from home for a period of thirty to ninety days before you and your boss formally evaluate the situation. Starting with a trial period can help make working from home more palatable. Plus, if youâve never worked from home before, you may find that a blended schedule of in-office and at-home actually suits you better than working from home full-time. Be Flexible Go into the conversation with your boss with goals and a proposal, but be willing to take his or her feedback into account, too. Be flexible in what youâre asking for, and be prepared to give up ground if thatâs what you need to get your foot in the door. Maybe your three days a week goes to two, or your ninety day trial goes to thirty. Itâs still a start! 5. What Else Can You Give Up? Oftentimes, people who really want to work from home are willing to take a pay cut to do so, or at least forgo a big raise. This means that evaluation time can be a good time to ask for work-from-home privileges. If you get a great review and are offered a raise, consider counter-offering a smaller raise with the ability to work remotely part-time. Read: 6 Ways to Get Paid What Youâre Worth Maybe youâre not willing to give up a raise, but you have other privileges you could lay on the table in order to work from home. Or maybe you feel youâll be so much more productive at home that you can tackle additional responsibilities. Either way, you could give a little to get a little in this conversation. 6. Prove You Can Do It Finally, when you do get to work from home, donât take advantage of the situation. Put 100% into your work each day, and set up your lifestyle so that youâre more productive than ever. Keep track of your goals, metrics, and to-do lists, so that if thereâs ever a question of whether or not you can work from home well, youâve got data to back up your answer.
